Republican Backers of Marriage Equality Host Huge AFER Fundraiser

Fundraiser for American Foundation of Equal Rights to draw deep-pocketed Republican supporters

Ken Mehlman’s fundraiser for the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) will bring together some of the most high-profile and deep-pocketed Republican backers of gay marriage in the United States.

According to an invitation for the fund-raising event he’s co-hosting with private equity titan Henry Kravis at the home of hedge fund tycoon Paul Singer, notable Republican attendees will include Mary Cheney, campaign strategist Steve Schmidt, attorney Ben Ginsberg and former New Jersey governor Christie Todd Whitman.

AFER Board President Chad Griffin has said of the September 22nd event, “Our goal is to get as many people who aren’t on the side of gay marriage on our side, and once they are here, to welcome them.”
