Psychoanalysts Wedded to Same-Sex Marriage Idea

The American Psychoanalytic Association issued statement supporting the legal recognition of same-sex civil marriage.

The American Psychoanalytic Association has issued a position statement supporting the legal recognition of same-sex civil marriage and opposing discrimination against same-sex couples.

APsaA’s Committee on Gay and Lesbian issues reviewed research on LGBT parents and their children prior to releasing the statement in January. Critical factors in the decision included the high percentage of gays and lesbians who consider marriage to be important, the number of cohabitating same-sex couples that are raising children and earlier findings that indicate the quality of family relationships are more closely linked to child development outcomes than is parental sexual orientation.

Now, the committee is developing a proposed position statement on the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that prohibits gays and lesbians from serving openly in
the military.

APsaA is a professional organization of psychoanalysts throughout the United States, comprised of nearly 3,500 members.
