Out Artists on the Rise

What do a gender-bending opera diva, an innovative guitar virtuoso and a queer electro-rap group have in common? They’re all part of our profile of 16 unique out musicians on the brink of stardom

Alicia Warrington of Lillix

Lillix’s drummer, Alicia Warrington, brings a diverse edge in a soft and delicious package as the all-girl group’s only gay member, while her thunderous thrashing propels the band into dimensions beyond the normal pop experience.

Warrington has been playing in bands since she was 12 years old, catching her big break when she started rocking with Kelly Osbourne in 2002. She has been out since she was 17 and says she doesn’t allow it to breed negativity in her life.

“The way I looked at it was that my mother already knew and has always been amazingly supportive and that was all I really cared about,” Warrington explained.

“As long as I have the support of my family and friends, I couldn’t care less what the world thinks about me being a homo.”

She split from Osbourne in the middle of 2005 and joined Lillix, creating the most recent incarnation of the band and cementing their well-seasoned sound, which has been described as “a bit of Blondie mixed with The Killers.”

Lillix’s newest album Inside the Hollow is set to release in the late summer or early fall; fans can expect a more intricate sound since Warrington began experimenting with the use of loops on most of the new tracks.

“This is the first time that I ever used loops or anything like that,” said a travel-weary Warrington after flying from her home in Los Angeles to Vancouver, Canada for a gig. “It really adds a lot to the show.”
