Obama, White House Meet With LGBT Groups on DADT

Meeting reportedly based on strategy to repeal military ban during lame duck session

President Obama on Tuesday briefly stopped by a meeting between LGBT equality groups and senior White House officials on the possible repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

The president dropped in the meeting to, according to an anonymous official, “directly convey to the participants his personal commitment on this issue.” Those participants included representatives from the Human Rights Campaign, Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), the Log Cabin Republicans, Servicemembers United and the Stonewall Democrats.

Details of the exchange remain unclear, but officials who met with the LGBT groups included White House Deputy Chief of Staff Jim Messina and Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett. The Advocate reported that although no specifics of the meeting have been released, “an email earlier in the day indicated participants would be focused soley on strategizing about passing legislation during the lame duck session.”
