VINELAND, N.J.– A New Jersey school board has stopped blocking gay and lesbian websites on high school and middle school computers.
Two Vineland High School students complained to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) that sites belonging to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) were being blocked by filtering software.
Student Justin Rodriguez told The Press of Atlantic City that gay-bashing sites were not being blocked.
The school added access to those sites individually before dropping the filter.
The ACLU and Yale Law School have been pushing schools to drop similar filters. Vineland was the first district in New Jersey that the campaign targeted.
The district’s filtering software still blocks pornography.
