MENY Marriage March Colors BK Bridge Rainbow

Hundreds of LGBT equality advocates gather to protest N.Y.’s lack of marriage equality

An undulating rainbow of umbrellas—canopying a band of hundreds of marriage equality supporters— crossed the Brooklyn Bridge Sunday in Marriage Equality New York (MENY)’s annual Wedding March.

Participants in the event carried, in addition to the multi-colored MENY umbrellas, signs highlighting the need for marriage equality in New York.

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, who recently protested the state’s discriminatory marriage laws by holding his own wedding in Connecticut, called N.Y.’s failure to offer gay and lesbian couples the protections of marriage a “disgrace.” Other elected officials and community leaders who spoke out included New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) and Rev. Pat Bumgardner.

"The love, families and relationships of all New Yorkers deserve to be treated equally under the law," said MENY’s Brian Silva in a speech.

Cast members of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York, including Kelly Killoren Bensimon, LuAnn de Lesseps, and Alex and Simon McCord, joined the throng of LGBT equality advocates on their trek from Foley Square in lower Manhattan over the bridge to Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn.

The march, now in its seventh year, was hosted by radio personality Blake Hayes and complemented by a festival featuring performance by the Lesbian & Gay Big Apple Corps, the cast of My Big Gay Italian Wedding and others.
