Lynn Schulman, a local activist with decades of experience in Queens and the citywide LGBT community, recently announced her candidacy for City Council in 2009. The Democrat, whose resume includes stints with government agencies, elected officials and the private sector, would be the first lesbian elected to office anywhere in the state outside the borough of Manhattan.

Schulman is registered to run for the seat in District 29, which includes Forest Hills, Rego Park, Kew Gardens, Middle Village and Maspeth. The current City Councilmember, Democrat Malinda Katz, is term limited and cannot run for re-election.

Schulman currently is raising funds to meet eligibility requirements for the city’s public campaign financing program. Out elected officials such as State Senator Tom Duane and City Councilmember Rosie Mendez have already expressed their support by hosting a fundraiser for her on Nov 8.
