Gaga Nixes Target Deal Over Anti-Gay Donations

Lady Gaga ended a deal with Target to sell an exclusive version of her new album because the megachain has made donations to anti-gay candidates

Pop megastar Lady Gaga has reportedly put the kabash on a deal with Target to sell an exclusive version of her new album over donations made to an anti-gay political candidate by the retailer’s corporate office.

The New York Daily News reports that Lady Gaga ended the deal concerrning the album, Born This Way, because of Target’s political donations policies and how they often adversely affect the LGBT community. Target came under fire last fall after it donated $150,000 to a political action committee backing staunch marriage equality opponent Tom Emmer, who unsuccessfully ran as a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Minnesota.

The mega-famous singer sat down with Target representatives last month to flesh out an agreement over the sale.

“Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they’ve made in the past … our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they’ve made supporting those [anti-gay] groups,” Lady Gaga told Billboard in February.

It remains unclear what changed between the time of those negotiations and now. Target representatives have so far declined to comment.
