Elliot Page Files For Divorce From Wife Emma Portner

The announcement comes nearly two months after Elliot came out as trans on Instagram.

Page Six reports that on Tuesday, actor Elliot Page filed for a contested divorce from wife Emma Portner in Manhattan Supreme Court. The announcement comes nearly two months after Elliot came out as trans on Instagram.

Elliot and Portner, who is a dancer and choreographer, had married secretly just after the New Year in 2018. After Page came out as trans on December 4th of last year, Portner messaged her support on Instagram, writing, “I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer, and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day.”

In coming out, Page expressed both joy and trepidation, given the violence faced by trans persons in our society. “The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared,” Elliot wrote on Instagram. “I’m scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the “jokes,” and of violence.”

The couple recently released a joint statement to members of the press, stating that they had been separated since last summer but that they bore each other no animosity. “After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer,” the statement reads. “We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.”
