The Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation announced in December that an anonymous donor had given the organization $1 million in honor of Erin Daniels and Leisha Hailey, the two actresses at the center of the breast cancer storyline on Showtime’s series, The L Word.

Named for the actresses, the Erin Daniels and Leisha Hailey Fund will be established to advance the Foundation’s innovative program that aims to end breast cancer by focusing on intraductal research. The anonymous female donor promises to match dollar for dollar every donation made to the new fund.

The gift, which is the largest private donation ever made to the Foundation, recognizes the authenticity Daniels and Hailey brought to their characters, Dana Fairbanks and Alice Pieszecki, during the third season of The L Word in 2006. Dr. Susan Love, one of the world’s leading breast cancer advocates, appeared on the show to address Dana and Alice after the diagnoses. In their relationship as lovers and friends, the couple contended with the breast cancer that ultimately claimed Dana’s life at age 32, and broke the hearts of many fans.
