Women At The Helm 2010

These dynamos lead some of America’s most influential nonprofit organizations—they are fighting the good fight and their work enriches our lives in countless ways.

Robin McGehee
Co-Founder and Director, GetEQUAL

Robin McGehee was the president of the parent-teacher organization at her son’s Fresno, Calif., elementary school until 2008, when her public opposition to Prop 8 led to her removal from the position. With several years of experience working for the Gay-Straight Alliance and Fresno’s REEL Pride Gay and Lesbian film festival, McGehee sprung to action and helped organize the city’s Meet in the Middle 4 Equality rally, later becoming co-director of the 2009 National Equality March in Washington, D.C. In March 2010, she co-founded the LGBT civil rights organization GetEQUAL, which focuses on direct action and online organizing. “The most rewarding aspect of our work is my own renewed sense of hope and witnessing the passion and commitment so many people have to own their equality by getting out, getting active and eventually, getting equal,” McGehee says. “I cannot describe the unexpected honor of meeting so many movement pioneers that I have grown up reading about while coming out. Knowing that we have the ability to connect the pioneers and the modern-day trailblazers is an extremely humbling experience for me.”
