These dynamos lead some of America’s most influential nonprofit organizations—they are fighting the good fight and their work enriches our lives in countless ways.

June Crenshaw

Chair of the Board of Directors of the Whitman-Walker Clinic

As the chair of the board of one of the nation’s most influential organizations serving LGBTQ and HIV-positive individuals, June Crenshaw has guided the Washington, D.C.-based Whitman-Walker Clinic’s recent expansion of services. The clinic offers all components of primary medical care, including gynecology and prenatal care to affected communities. It’s a tall order, but Crenshaw, who is an IT project manager by day, is dedicated to nonprofit work. She also serves on the Advisory Board of the D.C. Office of LGBT Affairs and is the facilitator of a women’s coming out group. “I am committed to being out and vocal on issues that impact the LGBTQ communities and especially lesbians of color,” Crenshaw says. “We are under-represented in the board rooms and I feel a sense of responsibility to be at the table if I can. It is a challenge to have our voices heard and our concerns considered, but when it happens, I know I am doing something real.”
