As The Sun Sets On Summer, Turn Up This Sapphic Playlist

The summer may be coming to a close, but it’s not too late to hit the pool and soak up the last bit of sunshine with your gal pals.

The summer may be coming to a close, but it’s not too late to hit the pool and soak up the last bit of sunshine with your gal pals. Don’t forget to pack your SPF and a speaker. Don’t know what to play if you’re in charge of the music? Then check out these new tunes from queer female artists that are guaranteed to get the party started.

Bad Girl – Daya

Since coming out as bisexual in 2018, Daya’s music has become more honest and confident than ever before. This track is maybe the sexiest song to come out of 2021. The lyric “need a bad girl ’cause the bad boys just don’t cut it” was totally made to be listened to in a bikini with a margarita in hand. This bop is guaranteed to make you feel like the baddest bitch under the sun (literally).

It Ain’t Love But I Love It – Sofya Wang

A homage to hookups and not taking relationships so seriously, “It Ain’t Love But I Love It” is the perfect soundtrack for a summer fling. I mean, come on, with the line “I want to feel like summertime, drank all night got you by my side” this song is literally perfect for this playlist. Sofya Wang is gender fluid, lesbian, and a first generation Chinese American. Her music explores self-discovery, personal relationships and sexuality. Her singles never dissapoint, and this one is no exception.

Loveline – Zolita

This one goes out to the astrology lesbians. With the line “she was born with moon in cancer, that’s my preference” and a literal reference to the app “Co-Star,” this Zolita song is for you. If you’re wiping chlorinated pool water off your phone to check you and your crush’s star sign compatibility this summer, you’re going to want to give this a listen. But be warned: it’s so good, be ready to have it on repeat until 2022.

Found My Friends – Hayley Kiyoko

It’s 2021. If you don’t know who Hayley Kiyoko is, you have some MAJOR catching up to do. She is literally lesbian Jesus. This song is my ultimate summer jam. It’s upbeat and catchy and all about being your own best friend. A true hot girl summer anthem! With the lyric, “swimmin’ deep in a pool filled with swirlin’ thoughts. Come on, stay, be my company ” it is perfect to sing poolside with your single lesbian bffs.

Healing – Fletcher

Fletcher once said “We can still be emo and want to twerk at the same time.” and that just about sums up her music. She came on my radar through her EP The S(ex) Tapes, seven songs that chronicle the breakdown of her relationship to her ex. What makes the project so special was that it was created during the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, while quarantining with that very same ex. They even shot music videos for the singles together. The song, “healing,” comes about a year after that project. It is a perfect hot girl summer song for those of us who are getting over heartbreak but still wanna get down on the dance floor. It is filled with self love, hope for the future, and I’m obsessed.

Body Move – Dizzy Fae

Dizzy Fae is an insanely talented talented queer Black artist. At only 22 years old she has already shared the stage with the likes of Lizzo and Kehlani. Her music is genre-bending and fluid, woven seamlessly together with ethereal vocals. She is truly a one-of-a-kind artist with a sound unlike anything else out there. She makes the ultimate “hype yourself up” music, perfect for a bad bitch poolside confidence boost.

House Burn Down – King Princess

You KNOW I had to throw some King Princess on this playlist. Although KP just dropped this track on music platforms, “House Burn Down” is actually not new to her die-hard fans. She performed it live on tour on a regular basis and fans have been begging for a recorded studio version. Time to celebrate by streaming it 24/7 all summer long. It goes so hard. Thank you KP for blessing our gay ears with this.

religion (u can lay your hands on me) – Shura

Shura is a UK artist who crashed onto the queer music scene back in 2014. This song is my favorite off of her new album [name], and it’s the perfect gay yearning bop. But the best part of this song may just be the music video. Two words: gay nuns. Seriously, check it out. I promise you will not regret it.

You Stupid Bitch – Girl In Red

No playlist of music by queer female artists would be complete without the Norwegian queen herself. Play this bad boy and you won’t even have to ask “do you like Girl In Red?” Just see if she knows the words and sings along. Genius. Thank me later.

Flowerbomb – Siena Liggins

Siena Liggin’s bio on all her social media simply reads “hide ur girlfriend,” and that is a very accurate representation of her vibe. Her music is so sexy you’ll want to hold on tight to your boo thang. Every song off her latest album, Ms. Out Tonight deserves an honorable mention on this playlist. But if you listen to the whole thing and fall head over heels in love with Siena, just know I told you so. Her sound is unapologetically gay and ~oh so~ sultry. The perfect music for feelin’ yourself.

More Than a Friend – GIRLI

GIRLI is an artist whose music has evolved over time, reflecting her experiences in real time. Since coming out as pansexual, her music has also evolved with her sexuality. “More Than a Friend” tells a story that is relatable for many queer people: falling for your best friend. The song is angsty, fun, and was totally meant to be played at max volume for the bff you’re secretly into.
