If you have ever wondered how you can help support trans representation in media, now is your chance.

Trace Lysette, trans actress and icon, is the star of “Monica,” an indie film about a trans woman who returns home to take care of her ailing mother after transitioning. Her mother does not recognize her as her own child, and Monica must navigate being back in her hometown as well as becoming a caretaker. This film debuted in September 2022 at the Venice Film Festival and was the first film with an out trans lead at the festival. After the film, Lysette and the film received an 11-minute standing ovation.

After critical acclaim at the award festival, the film has a distribution deal and is even getting some early Oscar buzz. This is where you come in.

Lysette has created a GoFundMe page to raise money to hire a publicist for six months. She posted a video on Instagram talking about the film with the caption, “Trans stories are important. And when they get the resources to do well, we just might get more of them. Hopefully I don’t have to connect the dots about how these stories affect our quality of life and how society makes space for us. MONICA deserves a fair shot and so I come to you with nothing but love and the dreams of our transcestors. 10$, 20$… no amount is too small, we know it takes a village!”

At the time of writing, the fundraiser is at $26,164 of her $30,000 goal. The community is showing up and showing out for this trans masterpiece. If you would like to support this film, you can donate to her GoFundMe page here.
