As the co-founder of a home staging and interior styling business, Katherine Maund loves to tell stories. A former brand strategist for companies like Beats by Dre, Wildfang and Coca-Cola, Maund launched her business with Michelle Nixon in 2015, and told GO she was inspired by the tales a thoughtful room design can tell.

“Whether it’s a perfectly landscaped backyard or an ironic ceramic planter, really good design makes people feel something,” Maund said. “I want to extend that feeling to as many people as I can.”

Based in Portland, Maund said she draws inspiration from the Oregon coast (“it’s moody, a little unpredictable, and always healing”) and has really enjoyed being her own boss, which gives her the kind of creative control she craves (“for better or for worse”). She encouraged other entrepreneurs to make the moves to get started in their chosen field and ignore any negativity that might be self-imposed or coming from outside sources.

“Don’t wait until you’ve perfected your product or your process; just put something out into the world and refine as you go,” Maund said. “And remember that as much as there is a market for your product or service, there will be a market of haters. Sift through the negative feedback for constructive criticism and let the rest roll over and die.”
