When they married in 2011, Theresa and Stephanie had the support of their whole neighborhood, and seemingly all of New York City. The couple, who met in 2008 at a women’s bar, had gotten a marriage license from the City Clerk on the very first day that same-sex couples could marry in New York. They’ll never forget stepping out of the office, expecting protestors, and instead being faced with a group of people cheering behind barricades. “We had all of this love sent our way by total strangers,” Theresa recalls. “It was a powerful day shared with other couples.” The next day, as they waited on their East Harlem corner for a cab to take them to their wedding, “people were cheering us on, clapping and honking,” Theresa says. “It was very encouraging.” Though the City Hall ceremony was intimate, they soon invited the city back into their nuptials: “We hitched a ride home on a double-decker tourist bus.”
