Nicole and Anna met on OkCupid—“like most lesbian couples in NYC,” Anna says. Anna made the plans for their first date: “five minutes from my apartment, 45 minutes from hers.” Nicole had to journey from the South Bronx to a bar in the East Village. “I was very late,” she says. The first things Nicole noticed about Anna were her “crazy beautiful” eyes and “confident aura.” The first thing Anna noticed about Nicole? “Not very punctual,” she laughs. “But really, I thought she was stunning and I loved her voice.” That first date led to many more, including a trek by Anna up to Nicole’s place in the Bronx. “I knew she liked me after that,” laughs Nicole. They are very different people, but in this instance, opposites definitely attract. According to Nicole, the key to their relationship’s success is this: “She cooks, I eat.” The two merged their lives, squeezing into small apartments in the East Village with grand dreams of getting a place one day with “more than one room, surrounded by multiple dogs, some with squished faces, and perhaps a really fat, healthy baby or two,” Nicole says. While Anna agrees about the extra room, she jokes, “having multiple children is aggressive…Children require way too many rooms.” But Nicole is determined: “I’m gonna keep working on this.”
