In 2006, life partners Sandy Potter and Kathy Keating ″took a leap of faith″ and left their longtime careers to launch a business around their love of animals. Perhaps prompted by their many pets—dogs, cats, goats, horses and a pot-bellied pig named Cuddles—the couple founded Funny Farm Petcare, a mini-chain of luxury boarding facilities for pups and kitties in central Indiana. ″We built our business one pet at a time,″ they say, and designed their facilities for parents who want their furry children pampered. Potter, Keating and their staff provide raised beds, spacious yards and even ″couch time″—when pets can romp on the couch, fetch toys from the toy box, and get one-on-one TLC. ″Since the beginning we have followed my dad´s philosophy: ´Be a doer. Thinkers are great, but doers get it done.´ With hard work and perseverance we now have three full-time boarding facilities,″ Keating says. With a core philosophy of respect and kindness, Potter and Keating mentor team members and support a handful of animal rescue organizations. One of their favorite quotes comes from Margaret Thatcher: ″Be careful what you think, your thoughts become your words; your words become your actions; your actions become your habits; your habits become your character. Your character is everything.″
