100 Women We Love: Erica Camille

We are thrilled to present the 2013 list of 100 Women We Love – Including…

If you’re planning to tie the knot anytime soon, Erica Camille “would love to shoot your wedding!” And you’d be lucky to have her. This award-winning photojournalist and destination wedding photographer, specializing in LGBT and international weddings, has shot everywhere from Park Slope’s Old Stone House to Forte Neemrana, a 15th-century fort in Jaipur, India. She believes being an out lesbian has positively shaped the way she takes photographs: “Through this lens, I’ve become a visual advocate for the LGBT community, and in my travel work, an advocate for exploration and compassion across cultures.” A past recipient of GLSEN’s Activist of the Year award, Erica Camille has shot the likes of Lady Gaga, Madonna, and Erykah Badu as a freelance concert photographer for NBC NY. But, she says, “The achievements I’m most proud of are not awards I’ve won, but moments like when a friend tells me, ‘My aunt lost her battle with cancer this week. I just want you to know the photo you took of her twirling in her yellow dress is on the front of the program. My whole family loves it because it shows her doing what she loved most, dancing.’” Proving once again that it’s the little moments captured that sometimes matter most. –QW
