100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Shawnee Harkins

Dallas native Shawnee Harkins is an international
fitness celebrity and a powerful voice in the LGBT community. Her commitment to fitness was born out of her personal struggle to overcome paralysis, after a near fatal car accident, and her passion for, “helping others to achieve their dreams.” She has traveled the country as one of Dr. Phil’s celebrity trainers helping get America fit; and she stars in her own web series, Empower Me in 6 on bodybuilding.com. Look out for her personal memoir of overcoming obstacles and empowering oneself. Harkins is also the exclusive fitness consultant for Sweet. She
will run the Sweet Sweat Bootcamp, with fitness activities, motivational speaking and cooking-light demonstrations, on board Sweet’s inaugural Caribbean cruise this November. -KD
