100 Women We Love: Class of 2009

Once again, we celebrate our favorite out and proud women. As difficult as it is to narrow it down to just 100, this year’s eclectic list includes artists, athletes, club promoters, community organizers, entertainers, entrepreneurs, filmmakers, politicians and plaintiffs, who are making a difference in our world and the world at large.

Shamim Sarif

A rare renaissance woman of recent times, Shamim Sarif does it all; author, screenwriter, and film director (she even writes lyrics to songs), she is best known for her films I Can’t Think Straight and The World Unseen. Described as a mix of the The English Patient and The French Lieutenant’s Woman, The World Unseen has won eight international awards and 11 South African Film Awards. Of Indian heritage and raised in South Africa, Sarif’s passion to make good films about women is unmatched, but not without challenges. She says, “It’s exhilarating, as all challenges should be! On the production side, finding financing for a script people loved but had elements that financiers were concerned about – lead women, a lesbian relationship, Indian leads, South African setting – presented some difficulties, but the universality of the themes meant it found its place finally.” -KD

Remember, these are in no particular order because we love them all!
